Racial Breakdown In US Sports Including MLB, NFL, NBA, & MLS

April 9th, 2009 by Will Leave a reply »

I stumbled across this very interesting diagram illustrating the racial breakdown of professional sports organizations in the US. The diagram includes the breakdown for Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Soccer (MLS), and the National Football League (NFL).

Here’s the breakdown,

Baseball (MLB) Racial Breakdown:

  • White: 60%
  • Hispanic: 29%
  • Black: 8%
  • Asian: 3%

Football (NFL) Racial Breakdown:

  • Black: 66%
  • White: 31%
  • Asian: 2%
  • Hispanic: 1%

Basketball (NBA) Racial Breakdown:

  • Black: 76%
  • White: 20%
  • Hispanic: 3%
  • Asian: 1%

Soccer (MLS) Racial Breakdown:

  • White: 59%
  • Black: 22%
  • Hispanic: 14%
  • Asian: 1%

Hockey, through the National Hockey League (NHL), wasn’t included. But I’ll safely venture a guess the NHL is over 95% white.

If we are speaking racial breakdowns then you gotta take into consideration how many of those 29% Hispanic baseball players are black Latinos and here are the black latinos from just the AL East division alone and expound on these numbers for the other 25 teams and you see that 60% or so of the latinos are black latinos. So from a racial stand point at least 15% of the 29% latinos are black. Add that to the 8% black Americans you the number of black in MLB is actually around 23% or better.

    Orioles-
    Vladimir Guerrero
    Félix Pié

    Red Soxs-
    David Ortiz

    Yankees-
Colón, Bartolo (mixed black but kinky hair dead giveaway)
    Iván Nova
    Mariano Rivera (mostly black)
    Rafael Soriano
    Robinson Canó
    Eduardo Núñez
    Pedro Feliciano (mixed black)
    Dámaso Marte

    Tampa Bay-
    Juan Cruz
    Manny Ramírez

    Blue Jays-
    Edwin Encarnación
    Yunel Escobar (mostly black)
    Frank Francisco
    Octavio Dotel

Isnt it interesting that the racial breakdown of soccer most closely resembles the overall US population more so than any other sport? Please feel free to comment me at my email addy, jason_roma@hotmail.com

There is no way in hell there are twenty percent of white people playing basketball unless your counting the females they screwing

  4. For some of us, life would be complete if we could watch an NFL game every day of the week. However, this would cause a world of logistical problems, with exhaustion and injuries becoming major issues for the players.

Wow there’s actually more asian’s in the NFL than Hispanics? I better tell my friend Garret… lol.

      Hi RB,

It’s just a cool chart I stumbled upon and wanted to share with the community. We all moreorless know the racial breakdown of each professional sport, I just put it up for those who like to look at exact numbers.

I’ll reserve a rant on the topic for the future :-)
